Lovebirds
Introduction
Recently I was presented with a Lovebird (Pepper) as a gift. I had just finished raising an orphaned baby starling who happily returned to the wild (and is doing well at last sighting!) and was missing having a little feathered attitude around the house. My mother and my brother got together to purchase an attitude for me. They presented me with a 9 week old hand raised baby Lovebird complete with cage and seed.
The first thing I do when presented with anything new is research, research, research. It didn’t take me long to realize three things…
1) Seed was the last thing my baby should be eating
2) My new bird would be a permanent, constant attachment.
3) There is a ton of conflicting information available on the internet!
The search began, and it got progressively more confusing the more I read.
The constant permanent, attachment I can deal with. It is wonderful really! He is always happy to see me, always ready for cuddles and when I am having a bad day he can still make me smile.
The seed though, that was more difficult and a large part of the conflicting information. Most will tell you to wean your bird off seeds, a few will tell you that seeds are just fine and all the reports of liver disease and death are strictly hype and propaganda, and even more still will tell you that you absolutely CAN NOT keep a Lovebird without another Lovebird for company.
The following pages are my attempt to sort through the deluge and come up with something useful, practical, and easy to understand.
Think of it as the “OMG! I Just got a bird and don’t know what to do!” resource. It is my hope that eventually this compilation will be useful to both new and experienced bird owners.
